Basidiome: adherent, mold-like
Hymenophore: smooth to granular, gray-green to
olive-brownish
Margin: same color as the hymenophore,
inconspicuous
Rhizomorphs: absent or rarely present near the substratum
Subiculum: same color as the hymenophore, very
thin and sometimes absent
Subicular hyphae: hyaline, with clamps, thin-walled, not encrusted,
2.5-4 µm wide
Subhymenial hyphae: hyaline, with clamps, thin-walled, not encrusted,
3-5 µm wide
Cystidia: hyaline, apically narrowed and partially encrusted, up to 70
µm long, partly also arising from the rhizomorphs
Basidia: hyaline, with basal clamp
Spores: brownish, irregularly rounded to elliptical in both frontal and
lateral view, often lobed, 7-8.5 µm, spines up to 2 µm long
Distribution: worldwide in temperate to subtropical regions, considered a rare
species in Germany
Note: The very similar Thelephora subtestacea has a brown hymenophore, more heavily
encrusted cystidia, and always individual reddish-brown colored
spores.
