Basidiome: adherent, loosely felty to mold-like
Hymenophore: smooth to granular, gray to hazel-brownish
Margin: same color as the hymenophore, inconspicuous
Rhizomorphs: absent
Subiculum: same color as the hymenophore

Subicular hyphae: hyaline to brownish, with clamps, thin-walled, not encrusted, 3-5 µm wide
Subhymenial hyphae: hyaline, with clamps, thin-walled, not encrusted, 3-5 µm wide
Cystidia: hyaline, cylindrical, expanded basally up to 7 µm, apically reddish-brown encrusted, up to 60 µm long
Basidia: hyaline, with basal clamp
Spores: brownish, some spores always distinctly reddish-brown, triangular in frontal view, often lobed, irregularly rounded to elliptical in lateral view, 6.5-9 µm, spines up to 2 µm long

Distribution: worldwide in temperate to subtropical regions, occurs sporadically in Germany
Note: Very similar is Thelephora galzinii, which has gray to gray-olive tones and no reddish-brown spores
