Basidiome: adherent, tomentose
or slightly felted
Hymenophore: smooth, hazelnut to dark brownish
Margin: same color as the
hymenophore, usually inconspicuous
Rhizomorphs: not present
Subiculum: same color as the
hymenophore
Subicular hyphae: brownish, with clamps, occasional
septa without clamps, thick-walled, hyphal walls swell strongly in KOH, not
encrusted, 4-8 µm wide
Subhymenial hyphae: hyaline to brownish, thin-walled,
relatively short-celled, with clamps, 4-8 µm wide
Cystidia: not present
Basidia: hyaline to brownish, with basal clamp
Spores: light brown, regularly rounded from frontal and
lateral view, 8-10 µm, spines up to 2.5 µm
Distribution: Worldwide in temperate regions, one
of the common species in Germany.
Note: The similar Thelephora
lapida has encrusted hyphae and slightly smaller
spores, which are also somewhat less regular at times.
