Thelephora pallidocastanea (X. Lu, Y.H. Mu & H.S. Yuan) Kυljalg, I. Saar & Svantesson 2024

Syn.: Tomentella pallidocastanea X. Lu, Y.H. Mu & H.S. Yuan 2018

Basidiome (dry) effused, adherent to separable, parts becoming pellicular and detached, incrusting wood, leaves and debris, continuous, soft membranaceous, up to 0.3 (0.5) mm thick.

Hymenophore very finely tufted, porulose to continuous and smooth, light brown to brownish or light greyish brown, with a faint rosy hue (7.5–10YR 6–5/3).

Subiculum indistinct and poorly developed to distinct, and then fibrous, separable from substrate, paler than the fertile surface, very pale yellowish brown to yellowish (10YR 7/4–6).

Margin indistinct or distinct and then araneous, pubescent, indefinitely thinning out, discolour, whitish to very pale yellowish brown (10YR 8–7/1–4).

Rhizomorphs absent in adhering parts, relatively common at borders and in subiculum where the basidiome becomes pellicular, loose to compact, up to 0.1 (0.2) mm thick, smooth to pubescent, pale yellowish brown,

light yellowish.

Hyphal system monomitic; hyphae with fibulate primary septa, some scattered simple septa and rather common adventitious simple septa in basal and rhizomorphal hyphae.

Subicular hyphae infrequent to common, regular (2) 2.5–[3.4]–4.5 (5) ΅m diam, cells (10) 14–130 (180) ΅m long, branching at some distance from septa, sometimes anastomosed,

with thickening to thick walls (0.5–1.5 ΅m), hyaline-subhyaline to pale yellow.

Subhymenial hyphae regular, (2.5) 2.7–[3.9]–5 (5.5) ΅m diam, cells 4–[14.7]–19 (25) ΅m long, thin-walled, hyaline, subhyaline.

Rhizomorphs when well developed with rare relatively wide hyphae in core, up to 7 ΅m wide, with thickening wall, surrounded by regular or infrequently sinuous and slightly irregular hyphae. (2) 2.5–5 (5.5) ΅m wide,

normally long-celled, (40) 80–300 (400+) ΅m, with spaced clamps and adventitious simple septa.

Cystidia absent.

Basidia narrowly clavate to clavate, sinuous, sometimes slightly utriform, 32–50 (62)Χ7–9 ΅m at top, 5–7 ΅m at the lower middle, hyaline to subhyaline, guttulate; 4 sterigmata up to 5.5 ΅m long.

Basidiospores with irregular to slightly lobed outline; lateral face ellipsoid to somewhat 2-lobed with flattening adaxial side; frontal face irregularly ovoid to slightly 3-lobed, rarely distinctly lobed;

polar face globose to irregularly globose; (5.4) 5.6–[6.21]–6.6 (7.0) ΅m long, 4.2–[4.78]–5.2 (5.4) ΅m wide in side view, 5.0–[5.58]–6.0 ΅m wide in frontal view, echinulate, 1-guttulate,

Q1 = 1.17–[1.30]–1.39, Q2 = (1.03) 1.07–[1.12]–1.18 (1.21), yellowish brown to brownish, distinctly darker than other elements. Aculei 0.8–1.6 ΅m long and 0.4–0.6 (0.8) ΅m wide at the base, tapering,

single, rarely arranged in crowns.

Chlamydospores absent.

Incrustation absent.
